Pre Ordering

Having just Pre-ordered some software for delivery at the end of October, I find that my card has been charged already.

Now I know some stores such as HMV don't charge until despatch, so what's the legal situation on this?

If the item is faulty/doesn't work/ is damaged, and seeing as the delivery will be well after ordering how do I stand?

In Holland CC transactions are covered for 90 days by the bank who issued it. I assume the UK is no different.
