I saw a big difference in detail and dynamic range Karlo, especially the highlights in this example.
Incidentally, so far, only one person has responded to this the way I was hoping - a generic, 'yes, in theory' maybe followed by the things which would interest the photographer
Rest assured, I would give full specs and examples if I go ahead. Maybe even free first go. Right now it's looking doubtful that there will be enough interest - 191 views and no responses

This is going to turn into another K-5II versus K-5IIs debate.
I just had a look a the 100% comparison
http://www.simonkennedy.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/drum-scan-vs-epson-v...
and like Karlo above I couldn't see any difference in detail. Yet in king's new clothes fashion the text underneath says
"Clearly the drum scan has more detail than the Epson scan – you can pretty much see individual bricks"
I can see individual bricks on both versions.

The comclusion as offered is correct and I suspect you need a new monitor. Those CRTs are not picking up the difference I think.

Nothing to do with my monitors. They can resolve individual pixels sent to them. The pixel is the smallest level of detail regardless of what monitor is hooked up to the digital outputQuote:

No it's not nonsense whatsoever. There are of course colour differences, and in a 16bit version of the scan I wouldn't doubt there might be dynamic range differences, however there is not one piece of detail you can see in the 'drum' scan version on the right that you can't see in the left hand epson scan in this pixel peeping pic ...Wow Smeggy! And as far as putting me down for a 'no' I am actually interested, which is why I bothered to look at the site claiming to show differences between the Epsom and the drum.... so what is the resolution in DPI and the dynamic Range of this Drum scanning you are offering.

It's absolute chalk and cheese! on the left is a noisy smudgy mess, on the right: a much cleaner, truer representation of the transparency. On the other pictures, the highlights are like from two different pictures, such is the difference. Overall, it's just a much better starting point - absolutely critical if you intend to go above A3 and not have to stand well back.
I can't give you any specs because this is really early, testing the water days and I haven't decided on the exact scanner. I'm just after a general feeling of whether to pursue this and invest in me and my experience instead of shares or something.

My first experience of this was in 1992 with a scan from my £1000 flatbed against a Heidelberg drum scan. I never went back to the flatbed for anything serious. Apparently, little has changed in the 10 years since I went digital. The old school techniques and craft are as relevent now as ever, but now they hold more cache because people have grown up behind facile interfaces - 'do you want to scan a photo or text?'

I only scan mono film and I do it myself.
My biggest issue is that I don't want to scan a full roll in full detail. I look at the negatives, pick out the good ones (rarely more than 1 in 5) and scan those.

so by your counting 191 no's then!?

Ha ha, no they are 'views'.
We had a discussion earlier about putting a no option in. I couldn't see any point as I'm interested in 'yes'. But it was too late to change.
Boy, this is hard work!
Thanks Gareth

The pixel comparison image presented on that site you linked to though is not by any sensible stretch of the imagination 'chalk and cheese' in terms of resolution. There's NO detail in the drum version that I cant' see in the Epsom version. And before anyone tries the 'it's your monitors' excuse again, I've checked it also on both a laptop and a tablet. It's absolute chalk and cheese! on the left is a noisy smudgy mess, on the right: a much cleaner, truer representation of the transparency. Now I wouldn't doubt the resolution and dynamic range of drum scanners is superior to regular flatbed scanners, and I put the lack of difference in the example as being a product of the transparency being scanned rather than the scanners themselves.

The original question was, 'do you need a scanning service', 'what would make you jump ship?' etc.

I would have thought you would really need to know how many answer 'YES' and how many answer 'NO'. For every 'YES' you get you might have got 10 'NO's or 100'NO's or maybe only 5 or so...point is you have no real way of knowing and therefore no real way of accurately gauging potential demand which you really need to know if you are going to be investing your own cash.
Plus, having looked at the 'Drum v flatbed' link. It might be my eyes which are getting on a bit or my monitor (22" NEC) or a combination of both, but I couldn't really see any appreciable difference between the two images at each stage other than the drum did include all the edge on one side. The rest of it seemed largely subjective to me or if there was a slight difference it was very small. Admittedly most people won't have an Epson 750 to start with.
Just some thoughts.
