The first place to start is with things you can do. Remove the battery, leave for a few minutes and then re-insert the battery. See if that clears the problem.
If there's a firmware upgrade on the Pentax website, then to that and see if that helps.
Also use a soft dry cloth to clean the electronic contacts on the lens and camera body, in case a lack of contact is causing the problem.
Finally try another battery in case the one you were using has developed a fault.
Finally, return the camera to get a quote for repair if still necessary.

I've already tried the battery, and the firmware is the most current. I shall try cleaning the contacts, and see if that helps.
Do you know if this is a common problem???
Also, I know about Johnsons, but is there somewhere else people recommend for repairs? I have found AsahiPhoto but know nothing about them.

If you join Pentax User Plus then you get 20% discount on service from Johnsons. You need to download the form from this site and send it with the equipment.

Had the same trouble, reset to factory settings ,and it seems okay now

had the same problem , did all the stuff that has been suggested here which appeared to cure but it kept coming back, usually when you least wanted it the shutter count was around 35-40,000 so got rid and bought a 11s. it is a fault that was reported more than just now and again but not a real hot topic like the AF problems with the model, somewhere in between. would not think repair would be a viable option financially when the camera is only worth the cost or even less maybe.

I'll try a factory reset too. I figured it will not be financially viable to pay for repair. (Secret high fiving myself and counting up the coin pot). I checked and my shutter count is only 16k, but I think this must have been reset when I had the service done as I'm sure I have taken many more than this.

UPDATE- I've tried all the suggestions bar sending it off for repair. She dead!
I'm thinking of putting all my pennies toward a k3ii, and maybe selling the k5 cheap cheap for parts??

If you only have the one battery it's definitely worth trying another.
My son has a battery that appears to charge, shows charged, but fails as soon as you try and do anything.

But I can do everything but take a photo, and the battery seems fine.
I might just pop into a shop and try one though to be sure!

I'm new to here. I was on holiday in Ljubljana a couple of weeks ago, hammering out travel snaps on my K5, when all of a sudden I couldn't take a photo. I was on auto, and zooming/focussing fine, but couldn't even depress the button halfway. Then received a message on the rear screen 'Battery Depleted'. I thought that was weird as the battery indicator had been on full, but just assumed I had worn it out that day. Got home, charged the battery - same problem. Changed lenses - same problem. I've only managed to find one topic on forums about a similar problem, but their problem was intermittent, and still cost around the £200 mark. I've never had a problem with it before and it gets lugged around when I travel, not to mention subjected to the elements! It was serviced and had the sensor cleaned by Johnsons about 2 years ago.
My issue is that I don't want to waste a penny on it if the repair is going to be more than £100, I'd rather invest in a new camera.
Has anyone else had this problem, or could anyone give me a ball park guess as to repair cost?
I'm kinda hoping it will be pricey so I can justify to my broke self to buy a K3 or K3ii (any opinions as to which is better???). The FF looks lush, but I cant afford it or the good glass, and for what I need, I think the k3/k3ii would suit me.
