"Found this under specs/Shutter type on the website of Ricoh.
Every sensor supports a kind of electronic shutter operation. This is how it is done:
First, a speed is defined at which a so-called virtual curtain can travel. The maximum speed for this infinite for the first (opening) curtain, and the sensor readout speed for the second (closing) curtain. Both curtains must operate at the same speed, but the second can be replaced by a mechanical one (D810). If not (K-3II pixel shift mode), then both curtains operate at the sensor read out speed.
At 8.3fps, this is about 1/10s, about 20x slower than the mechanical curtain.
Now, the operation is as follows:
1. the mechanical curtain is opened.
2. the sensor is reset line by line with a speed as defined by the (virtual) curtain speed.
3. the sensor is read out line by line at the same speed.
4. if more (multiple) exposures are required, repeat at step #2
5. the mechanical shutter is closed
Because the virtual curtain is so slow, it would lead to distortions like in video (jello effect). However, in pixel shift mode the subject is static and therefore this is no issue. Because the mechanical curtains remain idle, the sensor can be repositioned with the required pixel accuracy between shots.
To grap 4 exposures for pixel shift, the shutter only operates once. It will sound like a single 1/2 s exposure.
