very much a newbe..my dad advises me to put my pictures on the Gallery. When I go to the Gallery it simply tells me that I can search on my computer for the photo and load it. My pictures are stored in DNG RAW. Dad tells me that I need to change to jaypeg and resize. I am kind of out of my depth. Is there a simple explanation that I can grasp, please. Thoramay.

You need some image editing software, do you have any? If so, tell us what it is and we can show you how to convert to JPG.

Why not just shoot in jpeg to start with, then when your a little more experienced return to RAW.

To get you out of your current predicament the software that came with your camera should convert the RAW files to jpeg

You may find the easiest way to do this at first is in camera.
If you are using a K20D then look at pages 200-201 in the instructions here.

I have my dad's computer. Elements 6 and cs3. Am I right to pull up picture and then 'save as' into jpeg. I am reading Photoshop for photographers by Digital Cameras. When in jpeg, what size do I need to take it into Gallery. Is there a specific size. It's a lot to get my mind around. The books and mags I have of dad's talk in a language I can't understand. Where does a newbe start!!!

Yep, just about right there
Save as Jpeg ready to upload. I think the gallery automatically resizes images to fit , ( at least, I don't resize mine ).
Getting there! Thanks to you guys

Pentax K3ii, Pentax K10d, Kit lens ( 18-55mm ), 50mm f1.7 lens, Tamron 70-300mm lens, Prinzflex 70-162 manual lens, Various old flashes.

When you have finished your editing in CS3 go to File (TOP LEFT), Drop down box move down the list till you get to Save for Web click this, Window will open, on the right put in size's (Gallery Size is 800px on longest side) Click save, your photo is about the right size for most web use.

A couple of caveats about that. You can't Save For Web from a full sized image as the file size will exceed the limit. You need to resize shomewhat first. Image>Image size will take you to a dialog box where you can put in a new size. For web, the PU Gallery will not restrict you to 800 pixels but the forum will display your image better if you choose that size. The only thing you need to do for your purposes is pit 800 pixels in as the longest side of your image. The other figures will change accordingly. Let's keep it simple for now!

After resizing then you can Save For Web with no problems. Choose a quality level that gives you a file zsize of say 200-400K and you will get a fast upload.

I kind of think I understand JohnRiley. Doing it right might be another thing. I do smile at 'keeping it simple'. You guys use technical terms as if it were elementry, but!! what would I do without your guidance. I just want dad to feel good about his kit being used and I will persevere. Thoramay.

Just wondering here as I sometimes think twice before resizing it 800 X 600 pixels.

I came across this, doesnt this mean now that as most screens are 1024 X 768 thats the size we should use now rather than 800 X 600 pixels?
Unless I am missing something here, please someone enlighten me.

Thanks

Amin

If a full screen display was 1024x768 don't forget that will include all the headers and adverts and everything else. The image size in the forum has to be less than that if we want to avoid having to scroll to see all the page.

800 pixels wide will mean we can see all the image in one go, plus the message and it won't all be disappearing off the side of the screen.
