photoshop help! Please!

Hi, I am currently teaching myelf photoshop CS3 using a dummies guide and hints and tips in DSLR user magazine, and am stuck on something really easy (but its stumped me.)

I have a vase of flowers and have deleted everything other thean the vase and flowers, so effectively have a vase and flowers on a transparent background.

I then create another layer - Layer>Duplicate layer, and I want to flip this horizontally and vertically in order to create a reflection.

I am making sure the new duplicate layer is selected, then go to flip horizontal, flip vertical in order to crrate the reflection, however photoshop applies the changes to the layer below as well (the one i created the duplicate from.)

The original layer, background, and the cutout layer are both locked from the layers palette and then clicking on the padlock sign.

What am I doing wrong / not doing?

Go back to your original layer and duplicate it. That way you will not be working on your "locked" layer. To turn the image try using the "transform" commands. It is easier and more accurate. I do not have CS on this computer to talk you through it but if I see you are still struggling tomorrow I will do that. There is a great book, heavily discounted on Amazon by Steve Kilby which is just a bit more than helpful.

Make a Copy of the original and flip that one. You will need to make the canvas size of the original double the height (bottom only) then drag the copy onto the original.
Hope that points you in the right direction.

I am following a tutorial in DSLR user magazine, and can clearly see that when they flip the picture - on the most recently created layer - only that layer flips.

I try to emulate that, following the step by step process, yet, when i flip, with the most recently created layer selected, all layers flip.

This appears to be the case on CS3 and Elements 7.

So either I have some corrupted software, or I am being an eejit........



Hamilton - I cannot go back to the original layer - as that was the original photo. The next layer is the vase and flowers selected and everything else on the layer deleted.

the third layer, is a duplicate of the second layer - and this is the one I want to flip. However with this layer selected, when I flip, the cut out layer flips as well.

DOIK - yeah that will work but is a major Pain in the bum, and not as they do in the guide.

You will find in PS there are many ways to accomplish any effect. I would have thought two minutes is not much of a pain.
