Photography show plan muddles

I have just been planning my first ever visit to the photography show n Birmingham. Heads about to explode with so much information. have booked the Masterclass and would like to book to see Don Macullen (not sure yet). I also got a guide at £2.50 and then saw I could have downloaded a map, is this a good or bad thing I have done?

I am doing a session every day for an hour so I hope I can do the stands. have made a list of stands I want to visit. What I want to know is if this is the right way to go about planning things, or have I just acted like a bull in a china shop?

Sorry to ask, just wanted to hear from pros who have been before.

Many thanks.

I think any sort of plan is a good idea when you want to make the most of what's on offer, and £2.50 for a show guide sounds like very good value if it helps you navigate around and understand what's going on ... Have a great time and lets hear how it was ....

Thanks for your reply, it just seems a bit daunting and I hope I can get everything covered in four days. I think the half day workshop is money well worth spent. I have met Damien Demolder and he's a very nice man. I'm going to be on the go as soon as I walk through the doors. be fun hopefully

Hi Louise,

I'm more familiar with the old 'Focus on imaging' show, but from my experience last year the two are similar.

It sounds like you're approaching things in the right way. The sessions are probably the most useful parts of the show, followed by any exhibitions of photos that will be on display. The best advice I can give is to get involved, decide in advance who you want to talk to and get as much info as you can from them.

Be wary though. A lot of the exhibitors will offer 'show offers', some of these are genuinely good, others are not. You will probably find a lot of stands offering tuition, training, photo holidays or wedding/portrait 'qualifications' - think very carefully before spending significant amounts on these.

Most visitors will be showing off their cameras along with a suitably catchy title on their show passes pretending to be a pro. As I found out last year, taking photos of anything in the show is fair game, trying to get a shot of the outside of the NEC may upset the security guards...

Be wary of presentations on some manufacturers stands. I witnessed one last year which was basically - "I was an amateur with an APS-C camera using only 'P' mode, then I discovered I could switch it away from 'P' mode and became an instant pro using full frame gear".

Have fun and enjoy the show.

John.

Born again biker with lots of Pentax bits. Every day I wake up is a good day. I'm so old I don't even buy green bananas.

Having downloaded the show map, it appears to give only the stand numbers - anyone know if there is a list of which brands are on which stands?
K-3 II, K-3 and a K-70 from SRS (having now relegated the K-30 /"K-50" to a backup body), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!)
