PENTAX SURVIVEL

Hi, and welcome!
Your concerns are ones that a number of people have raised in this Forum, a number of times. The consensus seems to be that Pentax as a brand will continue, and we all hope will continue to be attached to ground breaking, high quality, well priced DSLRs. Looks like Pentax plan to introduce a medium format DSLR later this year, maybe early next, but at the same time Hoya, the parent company, send mixed messages about the future. Guess we all just have to hope and keep our fingers crossed
It's worth browsing the Forum for other similar threads; there's certainly been at least one on this topic in the past month or so.
In the mean time, keep the faith!!

Hi.
Don't expect Pentax to overthrow Canon or Nikon, and Sony will probabily secure number 3 or better.
What does that mean for Pentax? It means that you will get very good quality gear, satisfying the needs of any good photographer but more geared towarsd a niche. What we see with K-7 is a camera for travel, outdoor, or anyone who feels a smaller camera fits them better.
Gear will come more slowly and there are certain professionals whose needs will no be well met by Pentax for a long time.
In Portugal you have ForumFotografia or ZWAME/Fotografia were you can find a few Pentax users, but sure there aren't many...
I'm not sure Pentax is easily available there. For example last time I went back Worten (a big media/electronics store) started given more room for DSLRs and they had a stand just for Sony, nothing else. Fnac (another large media/electronics store) has always had a good section for photography, but dominated by Canon and Nikon.
Naturally people go with the flow...
Don't worry about not having the top brand or the top camera, worry about having the camera you like, need and can afford.
I see many times people stressing in the foruns how Canon and Nikon give you room to go pro and how no other brand has the same possibilities. That is a bogus argument, most people won't go pro, and if they do, then they should be able to do most photographic subjects with any camera.

best regards.

I don't know very well the story with the K1D, but if Pentax had made it work at that time, it would probably have gotten some more attention from pros and more chance of entering the consideration for purchase.
Nsantos mentions the lack of publicity by the distributor in Portugal, I think this happens almost everywhere. Many people that are not already in photography will be unaware of the brand or may know it from the old days, another name like kodak, fuji, contax or minolta.
Financially I think the lower to middle range is probably the biggest money make right now, after the surge of DSLR buyers. So its a good thing Pentax has come up with good cameras like the KxxD and K-m, but if people dont know about them it hurts sales.
Canon has the advantage of huge name and quality recognition from people coming up from compact digicams, Pentax does not. Executives at Pentax have said their digicam section isn't doing well, and the cams are average or good, but the competition there is large and there are better cameras to choose from (IMO). So... if the compacts market does not give Pentax publicity, there more effort must be put into the DSLRs. Has this happen adequately? I think not.
But I do have the felling that the shear quality of the cameras and the great value they are, has been realised in the forums and this has helped Pentax sales. This is great, but it still falls short I think.

You do not have to be number 1, 2 or even 3 to survive. Look at all the car companies that are around that are not even in the top 20. Subaru do quite well and they are not in the top 5 car sellers.
The main thing for the survival of Pentax is to make sure they are profitable and have at least a reasonable market share, which is about 4-5% at the moment.
