Pentax SMC DA XS 40mm f/2.8 accessories

I have just bought a Pentax DA XS 40mm as a compact lens to add to my holster bag when I mainly want to use my Tamron 10-24mm, but could use having something a little longer available.

The lens cap seems rather vulnerable as it is only push fit so I am considering getting an aftermarket clip on type. These are available in the 27mm size but I am wondering if the small size may still make these rather fiddly - has anyone tried one of these caps?

Another possibility is to get a step up ring and use a more standard size such as 49mm. Do other forum members think that the filter threads are strong enough to have a step up ring permanently mounted?

The other advantage of 49mm is that a rubber lens hood could be used - I think that only solid metal or plastic hoods are available in 27mm size. Does anyone know how you can be sure that a hood will not cause vignetting?

I've got a 49mm step up ring attached to min 40mmXS and use a rubber hood and 49mm clip on cap with no problems with vignetting.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like that is probably the way to go. I just need to decide which of the several filter sizes my other lenses use I should aim to step up to!
