Pentax service...

I did a very silly thing a few weeks back - I decoded to see if K10D and 17-70 lens could fly. It couldn't (I took the holster bag off the soulder too quickly having not done it up - so camera and lens hit the ground). Everything still worked fine, except smashed lens hood, K10D's rear control wheel a bit rough/ battery compartment very difficult to open, and a mini chip out of camera base. So, sent camera and lens to pentax to get fixed/ checked out for alignment etc etc.

After 4 weeks, I ring up to ask whats happening. Camera nearly ready and gets sent out the following week. Lens sent to Europe for repair. Approx 6weeks - I ring again: "Sorry - it'll be back next week" Same story the following week!

I ring again - both Pentax plus the new outsourced service centre - to see whats happening. It is realised that this is not good service! Two different messages come back;
1) The repaired item will be coming soon. 2)They have decided to send out a brand new service replacement - interesting!!

8 1/2 weeks after sending it in for repair, a brand new lens turns up. That was about 10 days ago.
Today... another brand new lens turns up as well

Don't know what happened to my original!
(Pity they didn't send me a 60-250 by mistake... lol )

I would keep the Lens for a month in case they realise there mistake and ask for it back. And if they dont sell it.

Call it compensation for poor service. I wish they had sent me a brand new replacement K20D instead of 2 faulty reconditioned ones.

I believe you can see it as a gift, it was adressed to you afterall right?
At least that's how the law here works

As I found out when I had my run-in with Park Cameras after their mistake with my K20d, the law is as clear as mud in this area.

I suppose it is an individual choice but if they sent me the wherewithal to return it then that is what I would do. I know it is a mistake on someone’s part and they could be asked to pay for it.

That is what I plan to do - ring Pentax next week sometime. I will probably compare the 2 first, though, and see if one is noticeably better than the other.

I'd sent a letter to the Pentax UK "Big Cheese" and let him see what incompetents he has on the service side and if he wants the lens back send someone to collect it. Alternatively send £50 to cover my time, packing and postage and I would send it back.

One good thing is that you can pick the best out of the two.

One thing forgot to mention in OP - the K10D seems better than before in that they have re-aligned the sensor so what is horizontal in viewfinder is also horizontal in the picture. Also the back focus problem is not as bad.
