If memory serves DNGs are a tiny bit bigger than PEFs. Perhaps 5 or 10%.

But not anymore with the K7 since that one compress the DNG files, I believe they are now roughly as big. The K10D, K200D, K20D ect. didn't compress the file and that's why they are so large.
I've no idea what the K-X does.
Just found it, the K-X compress them as well.

Found some filesizes on the US forum for the K7.
PEF: 12.1 MB (12,669,434 bytes)
DNG: 12.2 MB (12,743,732 bytes)

Difference: 74 KB (74298 bytes)

If you're using Adobe software DNG is the easiest way to get compatibility, other converters/software might not like DNG though.

Oh for sure. 10% savings in disk space is laughable. I use DNG for future compatibility. I have faith that DNG will still be around in 10 years, with PEF I'm not so sure

The only issues I have with DNG is that in CS5 camera raw the colours are sometimes out and I have change the Camera profile to embedded, PEF was always spot on in CS4, that aside it is only a minor niggle.

Photoshop Elements 8 from Amazon at below £60. With hundreds of pounds worth of equipment, that seems a fair investment. And you can read PEF files from the newest Pentaxes too.
Best regards

I expect PSE 9 out sometime soon. I'll see what extra goodies it offers over 8 before I part with any cash .

Gwyn,

Always waiting for the next version means that you never get it. If the current version matches your equipment (i.e. Camera RAW), why bother?

I'm fine for now - PSE6 can read K20D PEFs so that's OK.
When I change cameras I shall look at new software - I may go for Lightroom instead.

Just tried a photo in DNG and then again in PEF - the DNG is twice the size of the PEF so DNG is not going to be used with the K20D.

They probably would leave you the choice for now but I wouldn't be surprised if DNG becomes the Pentax standard instead off PEF.
Is this new to the Kx/K7? I've always been under the impression that the K20D, at least, compresses PEF files but does not compress DNGs (so I use the former).

Pentax do compress PEFs on the K20D - as I said in my post above a DNG is twice the size of a PEF so is not feasible to use, unless you like filling memory cards fast.

It would seem on the K& it is somewhat compressed but I have no experience of that - maybe someone with a L7 can do a test and confirm that?

Tried a test on my K7 and the file sizes between PEF and DNG were almost identical. A huge improvement over the uncompressed files from my K20D. Now I've got a dilemma - do I continue to shoot in PEF or switch to DNG?

Yep the Kx and K7 also compress the DNG file so they are now roughly as big as the compressed PEF file.
I also assume the 645D does the same thing.
