Pentax K100D vs K110D

OK,

It's been too long since there has been a dumb question here.

And we all know that's my job. Sooooo.....

I see a great deal of K100D and K110D packages on eBay. Both offer the same two lenses and both are 6.1MP.

Without disecting the two manuals, is the major difference twixt these two models shake reduction? (And about $250.00?)

the single and only difference between those two models is SR. Unless you count the price of course.

I have a very solid Manfrotto tripod.

So I think I'll get into DSLR with a K110D, and wait for shake reduction until I get a K10D.

This will give me the chance to accumulate some lenses (maybe a 16-45) in the meantime.

One of the most wonderful things about the K10D is the shake reduction, and the resolution, since it lets me hand hold, with long, old slow MF lenses, and then crop aggressively to get just what I want.

I would happily give up every autofocus lens to keep them.

If you're thinking about accumulating expensive lenses, but at the same time sacrificing having a K10D, then I think you're nuts.

Polite nuts, I hasten to add, not rude nuts. Each to his own. I just can't compute this one, is all.

I see the logic.
good glass can be carried forward to a better body in the future.
todays cutting egde dslr will be tommorrows bargain basement sale blowout....
by the time Mac is ready to splurge on a k10, his wife will have outgrown the optio, and be ready for the k110. The k1 will be the new top dog, and the k10's will all be on clearance! his 16-45 will still be good!

Knew you'd get the digital bug sooner or later.

Why not look for a K10D with 16-45mm DA as a kit. It's usually a cheaper way of acquiring a better than average 'standard' zoom.

And y'know you'll get a K10D eventually . . .

The point is, how much do you deprive yourself of, for how long?

If all you want to do is tripod-mounted landscapes, fair enough, I guess. It just doesn't compute for me, as I said. I held off getting a DSLR for a long time since the K10D didn't exist, and everything else just wasn't enough to get into digital.

If all I wanted to do was wide angle landscapes, I'd probably have stuck with my 5MP Sony compact and Photoshop.

Or my ME Super.

I don't know, my *ist DL2 produces some pretty darned fine shots. I upgraded because I wanted SR, the 9 frame RAW buffer and SSM lens compatibility, but it was a tight thing as to camera first or lenses. I went with the K10 because I hate tripods and figured 320mm with SR was far more sensible than 500 without!

I am now using the DL2 as a second body with the 18-55 mounted on it more or less permanently. I have no hesitation in using it interchangeably with my K10D except in situations where SR is a must. At some point I'll probably change the *ist for a K100D so that both bodies have SR, but I have lenses to buy first.

I've always progressed slowly - from screw mount Spotmatics, to K mount Super Program (Don) to Auto Focus (George) into 6.1mp Optio digital. Fortunately there are plenty of kids and relatives to pass the older technology along to. We're all learning the basics as we go, and appreciating the advancements.

I've watched you super advanced guys charging into K10D territory and all the software that goes with it, and I must admit that it's all very daunting to lil ol' me.

So, I'll plod along until I understand what I have and then what I want - and why. Then I'll move up.

The thing I love about Pentax is the glass, and the fact that I can upgrade with it, or retrograde with it in some cases.

If I could find a K100D (reasonable) with a 16-45 (great glass) as a package, I think I'd be exstatic.

If you haven't been keeping score - I've already leaped from a 110D with kit lenses to a 100D with a 16-45mm.

Now to find one..

I moved from the DS2 to K100D just for the SR which is superb on Sigma 70-300 APO and Sigma 170-500. Allows me to handhold - also works great on the Pentax 18-55 and 50-200. One of my daughters has a K110D and the quality is the same but no SR which given what she does she doesn't need.

I think the image quality is better overall on the K's than the DS2 which I was always pleased with.

Shake reduction seems to be a major factor for many of us forum folk.

What sort of photography do you do vs the kind your daughter's into?

Have you two thought about mortgaging something to buy a DA 16 - 45mm f4? You could share... (that ALWAYS works... )

Mac, I always vote for the guy who's not in power. I believe politictions, like diapers have to be changed often. For the same reason.

I'll concede that sr goes nicely with single malt scotch, but it still is just a "nice to have" luxury, not a neccesity.

having said that, I'm getting the k10, because aperture reads the raw file, which it doesn't on the ds2.

reducing one time consuming step in my workflow...now that's worth a little extra money to me.

is your computer up to the task of handling the larger files?

My daughter is quite happy (for the moment) snapping away building a colection of family photos with the 18-55, although she did do a one-day "Digital Nature Photography Course" at Guelph University with me last year. She lives 80 miles away and I would never see the lens if I bought the 16-45.

I am dabbling at nature photography with the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro and Sigma 170-500. Unfortunatley I really need to improve my bird photos before I can post anything.

Computer up to the task? Probably not. We seem to handle Optio 60 6mp stuff OK, but I haven't loaded any processing software yet. (Don't need it - all MY shots are perfect! Let 'er rip, Pete )

I too have a daughter who's interrested in documenting the family history (or she's working undercover for the RCMP). Hmmmm...

So far she's inherited all my non-Pentax 35mm film gear - mostly Minolta/Vivitar.

I guess making the leap to a K10D isn't extravagant now that I've seen the Cannon 5D. (Or is that like justifying a Jaguar 'cause it's cheaper than a Bentley?) (Oh, notice how I defer to the fact that this is a UK forum? - I'm so proud of myself to-day! Let 'er rip, George )
