I use a cable release, it's 100% reliable and requires no batteries! Like Gwyn I bought a generic one ("for Canon") on eBay for around £4-5 IIRC.

The one I bought is 5m but as Matt says they can be easily extended and, unlike the wireless version, require no line of sight between you and the camera. I've used mine to set the camera up in the garden near the bird table and then (using a 10m extension) trail the cable through the kitchen window so I can take shots of the birds feeding while I do the washing up. Works a treat!

I've thought of that Hefty.

But how do you keep the woodpidgeons from pooping on the camera?

I think that when we move, I will position the bird table in sight of the patio door, mount the K20D onto the trusty old Slik, connect a cable and sit in the arm chair, having set up the lens.

You can't, but the K10D will withstand a wipe down from a damp rag...

Yes I suppose so, but although my bird table gets a wipe the lime still takes off the Ronseal.

I think my idea will work, and the armchair with a pint of Broadside, washing up in machine, does it for me

K20D SMC DA 18-55mm, SMC DA 55-300mm on way.

I was wondering, do these remotes focus the camera too? Or do they litterally just release the shutter?

It does if the camera is set to AF. If you are focussing just on a small bird table, however, and have enough light for reasonable DOF, I would be inclined to use manual focussing.

I was just asking because oftentimes I am the subject of my photo and it'd be useful to focus. I might have a look into these then.

The wireless remotes just trigger the shutter, but you can set your camera (most models) to focus first. I prefer to get focus and then just use the remote to trigger.

The wired remotes operate in bub mode, so you can use them to open the shutter with the first action, and then close the shutter when you wish with a second action.

Both have their uses. Cheap eBay models work fine.

If you press and hold the button down on bulb the shutter will stay open until you release it, it works well up to about 3/4 meters, I bought a cheap one on eBay that works to 15 meters.

Edit: the camera will auto focus when you press the button.
