Put it on the camera body, cap on.
Hold the AF button to force the lens to focus while at the same time turn the focusing ring back and forth. You should see the AF light turn on while this happens.
After a while, there's a chance the SDM will become free and so the lens will start to focus correctly.

Tryed both ways and still no joy

Before you try either of the first two suggestions, get a small screwdriver that fits the screwdrive slot in the end of the lens, then keep rotating the screwdriver to drive the lens focus from end to end. Do this for a few minutes. Then try suggestions above. Wakes my dozy lens up every time.

This method seems to also click when you manually focus the lens at a distant object. The lens seems to try and push for that last bit of precise focus, freeing the motor.
