Pentax DA* 200 and 300mm

Morning everyone, and apologies if the answer to this is around somewhere already. Am I correct in thinking that these lenses on a K3 perform as 'more than' their stated focal length? That is, the 200 is like using a 360mm and the 300 a 460?

Focal length is focal length and cannot change.

What will change is the field of view...ie what you see through the viewfinder. So the 300 on a crop sensor will have the same field of view as a 450mm lens would show on a full frame sensor.

Both the DA200 and 300 were released for a crop sensor body. Optimised for Digital if you like (Pentax had no FF body at the time), hense the name DA. But the designs are capable of producing an image on a full frame too. But irrespective of whether released for a crop sensor or a FF, a lens focal length will be the same.

Thank you, and yes, I understand that focal length doesn't change; my question was simply, is using the 300 on the K3 the same as using a 460 on a 35mm in terms of the image in the viewfinder?

The crop factor is more like 1.5x on Pentax (1.6x on Canon), but yes, you've got the idea.
