Pentax advice

Hi, everyone, I'm new here, my name is Daniel. I found a PF-80ED for about $750, which contains an eyepiece with a 20-60 zoom. I know I'm going to need another digiscoping eyepiece eventually, but I wonder if anybody has any opinions or ideas about this particular application. I have saved up for the scope and I want to get something that will last longer and provide good quality. Any advice would be very helpful.

Hi Daniel and welcome to PU.

If the scope came with the correct eyepiece why would you need another one? Is your intended application to use it for photography? If so you may need one of these link

I'm not sure how much expertise there will be here regarding spotting scopes, most would buy and use dedicated camera lenses for their Pentax cameras. You actually might find more knowledgeable advice from a dedicated digiscoping forum such as https://www.birdforum.net/forumdisplay.php?f=243

This might be worth a read too from the USA Pentax forum: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/58-troubleshooting-beginner-help/363746-spot...

Hi Daniel

I have tried various ways of digiscoping, both with my Pentax istD and K70 and a Sony RX100 compact. After having struggled with various adaptors and mounts I have come to the conclusion that for quality photographs through the scope then my Samsung phone mounted with a bracket on the scope gives by far the best results. For this arrangement your existing eyepiece and the PF 80ed will be fine. You just need to make sure the bracket you use allows access to any buttons on the side of your phone.

Pentax make a special eyepiece, the Pentax PF CA35 Camera Adaptor, I have copied the following from the Wex website where they are available to special order. I have tried a bespoke adaptor on my Hawke spotting scope but the biggest issue with such fittings, which attach to the eyepiece, is that the camera interior is not sealed so dust on the sensor becomes a real issue. I like the idea of the Pentax solution as it replaces the standard eyepiece so everything is sealed like a normal lens, also Pentax telescope eyepieces are considered amongst the best available today so the optics should be good.

Sorry Quvamane I missed that you are US based, but I dare say that there will be stockists there, B&H has one and it might be worth trying eBay for a clean one.
