Ridiculously low prices for such a good quality converter. Mine sold for £59 (might have been a bit less) early this year - that was pretty much the "going rate" at the time. A couple of years ago they were selling for £100 plus

Sorry Resco, I think I'll be keeping hold of mine then, it's useful for using with my DFA 100mm macro and using the catch-in-focus function. Think I paid £120 for mine 3 or 4 years ago

I was going to say I've got one, but Lennyblokes scoopered all chances of anyone selling theirs. I paid £120- £130 each for the two I have.
Possibly Pentax's best TC although it's not AF which is a pity.
I keep meaning to test it against the latest 1.4x, but haven't done so yet.
I'm not sure it matters, because one's AF and the other isn't.

Sorry - but at the time I sold mine there were a couple available (ebay and uk camera shop) at a similar price. There is no reason why you can't try to sell it for a higher price (they are superb converters after all) - but the market tends to find its level I was going to say I've got one, but Lennyblokes scoopered all chances of anyone selling theirs. p.s. I paid over £100 for mine too I believe

What is the difference between this 1.4x job that everyone raves over and the Pentax Rear Converter A 2xS (and L) which one rarely sees?
I know there are dozens of converters, doublers and the like out there, most of which are so, so but the only dedicated Pentax rear converter that ever gets a mention is the 1.4x

The converter being referred to is the Pentax A 1.4x-S (same age and standard as the 2x-S and 2x-L that you mentioned), it was designed/optimised to be used with lenses up to 300mm. The current version is the HD-DA 1.4x which differs in that it is Autofocus, Weather Resistant, has a different element construction and is compatible with most Pentax AF lenses. What is the difference between this 1.4x job that everyone raves over and the Pentax Rear Converter A 2xS (and L) which one rarely sees?

As far as I'm aware there have been only 3 Pentax 1.4x converters - the current HD-DA, the A1.4x-S and the A1.4x-L (for lenses 300mm and above).
In terms of quality the A1.4x-S is one of the best converters I've ever used, and I suspect this is why it gets mentioned so often. The A2x-S is also in the same high quality bracket.

We must say that the pentax rear converters A 1.4x L and A 2.0x L could be used only on Pentax 200/2.8, 300/2.8, 400/2.8, 600/4, 1200/8.
Can't be mounted on all other lenses.

I bought an old 35mm era Vivitar 2x teleconverter with K-mount in perfect condition on ebay for about £30.00. It works absolutely fine but needs manual focus and exposure though, so with my eyesight it's rare that I get a pin sharp photo.

Thank you for the explanations.
I was beginning to wonder if the apparently superb results I've been getting from my recently acquired A 2xS were due to my wishful thinking since the thing never gets a mention. So, now I can be genuinely pleased with it !
