Hello,

I use a Pentax ME with a Pentax -M 1:2 Lense. I have just been given a an SMC Pentax-A 1:1.7 lense and wazs wondering which would be the better lense to use?

Thanks,
Pip

Hello Pip,

Optically there's no real difference between them - both are superb!
The 1.7 lens is slightly 'faster' and therefore more usable, particularly in low-light situations.
The A series lenses were developed for program cameras such the P50 and Super A, whereas the M series were the current models for the ME, MG and MV etc.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd keep the A lens and you'd be able to take advantage of the extra auto-aperture feature (A position on the aperture ring) should you upgrade to a program or AF camera body in the future.
For now, the A lens will behave exactly as if it were an M series 1:1.7 lens on your ME.
Die my dear doctor, that's the last thing I shall do!
