I think there are two different arguments going on here.
Most people seem to find that a 6mp DSLR is a good match for a 35mm film SLR, and will indeed be a better choice in many circumstances.
However, few would contend that a 6mp DSLR can compete with MF when it comes to quality. There are obviously size, weight and costs advantages, but MF would always yield higher quality (in the hands of a competent photographer).
It's like trying to compare a bicycle with a bus. They're different things.

Pentax plans to release a digital 645. That should keep both camps happy!
For a price.

Digital does have a quality all of its own, sometimes suitable for the subject, sometimes not. There are also some things it can do that were previously impossible - you could, for example, make infra red pictures without the coarse grain structure of IR film. If you wanted to.
There is a lot of exploring to do yet in digital, so I guess it will challenge us for a long time yet.
