Haven't spec'd the Sigma lens, and I know the Pentax is much less now than when I bought it.
Two things to consider...
Does the sigma have weather sealing? Is that important to you?
Also the silence of the SDM on the Pentax lens is nice. Does that matter to you?
I find the optics quite acceptable. Better than any other non-prime lens I have that falls into that range. I think most people find the quality quite good, but perhaps not meeting expectations of a DA* lens of the original price point.
I don't know if the price of weather sealing outweighs the price of a plastic bag and a rubber band, but a few times I got caught in the rain by accident, I had little doubts.

I am very happy with mine. Some people have been unlucky, but if you buy from a reputable dealer, they will sort out any problems.
There is little point in having a weather-proof camera and not having weather-proof lenses to go with it.

That's quite true, but having said that we have had some success in very poor weather with any lens on out K10Ds. It just needs a modicum of care with the lenses, but they have so far fared pretty well in some atrocious conditions.

I suspect JR is pushing his luck deliberately. One day a lens will leak, and then it will be: "Got to have a DA* 16-50!".Quote:

Everyone handles their lens lust in their own way.

Given the reported lens issues on the US forum, and as I am also now after a DA* 16-50, my view is to go buy it physically at the dealer shop and try it before walking away.

I purchased my 16-50 like that, I had to pay a little more for it than elsewhere, but i got peace of mind and a hassle free purchase. I just walked around the store snapping a few shots. The dealer also put my SD card into his laptop so I could study the pics better.

thanks for the info.
I have used the kit lens in some bad weather with no apparent ill effects, but would be nice to have weatherproof lens.
the sugestions to try at a dealer sound like a good option, what should i be looking for specifically?
regards
rick

If you back up in forum you'll see a bunch more on the 16-50mm.

Amateur Photograher compared the Pentax 16-50 2.8 and the Sigma 18-50 2.8 lenses.
the conclusion was very close in image quality, but I have heard of quality problems with the Pentax lens.
do any of you guys use either of these optics?
regards
Rick
