Pentax 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 with 1.4x converter

I've been using the Pentax DA* 300mm f4 with the Pentax-DA AF Rear Converter 1.4x converter on my K3II for wildlife shots and I've been pleased with the results. Recently though I've been thinking of investing in the Pentax 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 lens to bring more possibilities into view and was wondering how the lens performs with the converter. Any thoughts?

Just remember the 1.4x is not suitable for FF.

Not sure if i'm imagining it, but i think I read somewhere that Pentax are bringing out a FF convertor later this year...there might have been mention of two new convertors.

I'm not planning a switch to FF, just wanted to know how well suited the x1.4 converter is to the 150-450 zoom lens.

Fine on an on you k3 II but remember the perspective at 450 is equivalent to a very long telephoto when you combine the cropping factor for the APS x1.4 from the converter.

The field of view will be comparable to that of a lens of 945mm focal length ( if my old codger brain is still OK - if not please feel free to correct me)

But I have used the 1.4 x on the 150-450 with my K3II and if your camera and lens are well supported it’s optically ok for sure, but not ideal; bit like using an RPGL or carrying a extension ladder o your shoulder

I didn't have the K3 + 1.4x + DFA 150-450 for long but I was very happy with the results, here's a couple of example, both hand held IIRC:

Depends what you mean by "not suitable". I regularly use the 1.4x convertor with the 150-450, Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and the Tamron 90 f2.8 on my K1. It works well with all these lens with only a small amount of vignette in the four corners. This I usually deal with by a minimal amount of cropping.

This was taken on the cliffs at Flamborough Head with K1, 150-450 plus 1.4x convertor. Very little vignette

The 1.4x was designed for crop sensor, so to me that amount of vignette means "not suitable".

Wonderful shots, I would like to buy 1.4 x converter and use it with my K5IIs and DA 100mm macro 2.8 WR and 60-250. I found in Italy one used but similar to new.
Please have you a samples with these lens?
When this converter is used the main lens is recognized by ACR for distortion correction?
Thanks for your help and have a nice week.

I use the x1.4 converter with my K3II and PENTAX-D FA 100mm F2.8 MACRO all the time - it's a great combination giving additional stand-off distance that's very useful for butterflies.
I don't know if the camera recognises the converter for distortion correction (I usually shoot RAW) but the results are first class. See my Flickr pages at https://www.flickr.com/gp/darrelphoto/05N75s

And I use the x1.4 converter with a K3 and Sigma 105mm macro to good effect. Can't see why it shouldn't be as good with a DA 100mm macro and K5IIs. But like Darrel, I don't know whether the lens and/or converter is recognised for distortion correction (I never use it).

Thanks for reply, I am sure that the converter works fine with K5IIs and DA 100 mm macro.
Darrel I shoot in raw (dng) only in raw, I've seen your photos, my congrats for macro and train photos that is one of my favorite subject.
I'm considering the purchase.
I wish you the best.
