That 100-300mm is very underrated, they are actually very sharp at f/8 and even better at f/11. Can suffer from the odd bit of purple fringing usually around buildings.

Any idea what manual focusing is like on this lens?

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Its got a big manual focus ring at the front and is quite 'grippy' so no slippage as far as I've ever noticed.

Very good for manual focusing, rubberized ring. Power zoom which is quite good or can be switched off by pulling zoom ring backwards and using as a manual zoom. The power zoom speed is constantly variable (like an accelerator). Can be hand held at 250-300mm fairly easily.

It's not power zoom Shim. My old 70-200 was a power zoom (jeeze back on my old Z10!) but the 100-300 is just a manual zoom.

Are you sure it is an FA then? Bojidar's website states that the FA has power zoom, the F doesn't. Unfortunately the photo of the FA on his website is rather poor but the two lenses look remarkably similar.

Your right it has the focal lengths marked on the ring not in a window like mine which is the FA version. Maybe there's two FA versions.... strange :

There are two FAs with slightly different apertures but completely different construction and look totally different, it is silver for a start!

This appears to be an F in an FA box... Same construction though so optically probably the same lens minus the power zoom.

Mines the black FA, this is the dark grey F which came out after the FA. but was produced along with it for 2 years. The silver one looks cheaper, lighter and smaller and has less elements.

The Pentax 100-300mm has now been sold. The Sigma is still available, if anyone is interested or I'll stick it on ebay at the weekend.
