PENTAX *isDL and PENTAX AF500 FTZ flash unit

Hi all,
I just got a brand new PENTAX *isDL camera and I immediately tried to use it with my PENTAX AF500 FTZ flash unit (before reading the manual!) but all the photos were resulting overexposed! It seems the flash is running at full power and the camera is not stopping it correctly.
1. Can somebody explain me reason why it's happening?
2. On the manual I found that P-TTL flash mode is available just for the new AF360FGZ... it means there is no way to use my old PENTAX AF500 FTZ unit?
3. May I have damaged my new *isDL camera by using PENTAX AF500 FTZ flahs unit with it?
4. Is it there any workaround?
5. May backward compatibility with old flash unit be available via firmware update (I read *isD was supporting PENTAX AF500 FTZ !

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best Regards
Pietro

The 500 should work fine with your DL in TTL mode. Make sure both the body and the flash are set correctly, in accordance with the instructions in the manual. I am sure you have not damaged your camera - what's more likely is that the flash is firing at full power in manual mode.

I use the ftz500 with my istds2 and had overexposure too. pttl won't work and wireless ttl won't work, but second curtian sync does and ttl does.
one caveat is this- set flash exposure comp in the camera bodies menue to - 1.3 to -1.7.
I remeber that trying the 500 ftz on a dl at the camera store and it went full power..no damage to the flash or body but ftz compatibility is one more feature stripped down from the ds to the dl.
maybe selling the ftz will ofset the cost of the new flash for you.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

The DL should, logically, work in TTL mode with any of the Pentax digital flashes (those with three extra contacts on the hotshoe).

It won't do P-TTL with the 500, because the 500 can't do P-TTL. But it should be able to do anything that is possible with the 500.

I may be wrong, but it seems extraordinary to make it work with some digital flashes and not others. I find it hard to believe that "ftz compatibility is one more feature stripped down from the ds to the dl". Presumably by this you (Don) mean that the DL won't allow the flash to zoom automatically. I'll take your word for it, but it must be more expensive to disable some features than to allow them.
