I'd say you were "bang on the money" with the process you adopted. If you process each individually, then stitch them together to form the pano, you will most likely see lighting and/or colour variations, making it more difficult to even things out. For me, the above example is an amazing effort.
I made a pano a couple of years ago when I was in Thailand, and a copy now resides on my Flickr pages. My first ever attempt was on a beach on Koh Similan, but the stitching was very noticeable because I omitted to take account of the waves breaking on the shore!!

Nowt wrong with that un Nigel!
Shoot/stitch vertically, if you can, ICE is good but it needs plenty of details to maintain accurate stitches as opposed to some of the ludicrously expensive ware out there! (Mind you not all that is good either!). As I said shooting vertical gives the Software more to go on, if your shooting handheld leave a bit bigger overlap to compensate for movement and that's about it really...

I recently created this panoramic (my first attempt) from 5 x PEF files. They were loaded directly into Microsoft ICE, cropped and then saved as a TIFF file.
The TIFF file was then imported in to LR5 where I applied a few manipulations such as Highlight Recovery, Sharpness, Tone Curve etc.
Which got me thinking. Is this the correct/best sequence to follow, or should I process each file first in LR5 then Export as TIFF's into ICE ?
Any hints/tips from those of you with experience in creating panoramic images would be most appreciated !
