Paint Shop Pro - changing image resolution

It is actually 72 pixles per inch and is the resolution that the camera takes the picture at. What it referes to is the size of the pixels and is most usefull for sixing an image for printing.
For example, a sheet of A4 is about 11 inches across, if you want enough pixles to print at 72 pixles per inch you would need a picture 72x11 pixles wide or 792 pixles.
I would not worry about it and it is used for calculation for printing, in this term, if printing a 10MPixle file on an 11inch wide sheet, you are getting 235 pixles per inch resolution!
Hope this makes some sense.

No no, camera doesnt't take pictures at 72 PPI or other PPI value. It is actually 72 pixles per inch and is the resolution that the camera takes the picture at.
You take the number of pixels camera produce, relate it to the (Desired) printout size and get resolution.
petemasty
Are you sure it is "72 pixels per centimetre" not 72 DPI (dots per inch) ?, in the latter don't worry about it, it has nothing to do with the quality/resolution of picture taken by the camera.

It's in the EXIF information - take a look

Yes it is in exif - as a DPI, and has nothing to do with the resolution of the camera, it is just a value 72 set-up for this field, nothing else.. To save my typing it, it has been well explained here:It's in the EXIF information - take a look

72 DPI is 'screen res', and is the default resolution for web images etc.
300 DPI is 'print res', and is the desired resolution for publications.
In all fairness, it's the image size itself that's important where we're concered. The DPI is only concerned as a 'multiplier' essentially, when it comes to default sizing.
As for the setting in PSP, in PSP 7, it's in the 'rulers and units' section as the 'default resolution' slider. But embedded info overides that. You can use the resize dialogue in PSP 7 to change the images embedded DPI

There's a very common error being repeated here. Resolution in the camera, on the monitor, in Photoshop, is measured in ppi - pixels per inch. 72 (or 96) ppi for the monitor, 300ppi for a print.
The printer lays down ink in dpi - dots per inch.

And all that is explained in the link I posted above, as well as info that DPI field in exim means nothing, and surely has nothing to the camera resolution.

It's irrelevant as far as the camera is concerned - the size of image that results from 72ppi for a 14.6MP camera is absolutely immense.
Some cameras show the figures related to 180ppi.

with a figure of 180ppi it will effectivly reduce the image right?
The program is showing 180ppi but the monitor effectivly only displays 72ppi so some pixels aren't shown.

A monitor displays an image at 72ppi, regardless of the size of the image.
So an A3 sized 300ppi image is interpolated downwards to 72ppi for display.
The image size and ppi are inter-related assuming that the pixel count stays the same. You can see this working by playing with the image size dialog in Photoshop. (Image>Image size)

In the printing world, you want a file with 300ppi to output the digital file that will be used to do the printing plates. Most printers are actually working with less than 300dpi, unless they are using stochastic screening (also called FM screening). The 300ppi needed is from the fact that a lot of printers are printing with 150dpi screens, and it was figured a long time ago that using 2 pixels to produce 1 dot was about optimum for what printing presses can output.
