P50 apeture blonde moment?

Having a bit a moment with a P50. Its probably me just being silly but set on AUTO or MANUAL when I change the f-stop shouldn't that show in the viewfinder display. It only does if I depress the DOF preview, it gives a different reading when the DOF preview is held down as apposed to not. The lens is a 'A' lens not 'M' and batteries are new. The Program modes seem to work fine although I am yet to develop a film.

The first thing to try is cleaning the camera and lens contacts with a soft cloth. Then reseat the lens and see if the problem has cleared.

Thanks John, yep all contacts cleaned. This happens with another lens also so I will presume its a body thing as opposed to the lenses.

So I am right to think that when set to Auto/Manual when the shutter is half pressed if I select different stops the speed display in the finder should change, which at the moment it doesn't. If I stop down with the DOF preview and select different stops the speeds change.

This is my first P series so got me a little baffled or just a ill body.

Yes. Suppose we use Av, as the aperture is changed the speed should change to compensate. You change the aperture by turning the aperture ring. Set the aperture ring to "A" and now the shutter speed can be set and the aperture will change with varying light levels, and of course also if the shutter speed is altered.

Set the aperture ring to A and the body to AUTO and you are in program mode.

And so on. You're not forgetting that the aperture ring is an active item on these cameras by any chance?

To change aperture in AV/manual you actually use the aperture ring, not something on the camera body like the K10/20 etc.

yes thats what I'm doing, but as I change the aperture ring setting (say from f2.8 to f4 or f16) the shutter speed does not change (unless I use the DOF preview when the shutter speeds then move accordingly).

So do we all agree its the camera and not me? and any ideas on a home fix or just put up with it?

Try another lens perhaps and make sure it is indeed the camera. Then either use the modes that work, get it fixed, or, probably buy another from eBay for less than the cost of a repair.

Got me another ME Super on its way so not too fussed, the P50 will have a nice spot in the display cabinet with all my other delights.
