Thereafter you can bump shadows and reduce highlights beyond the usual capability of the sensor, or without introducing additional noise or removing detail.
Doing that in camera is a bit more ‘basic’ in terms of the processing but the ideology is the same.

Just to point out....they were not merged on camera. I do all my merges in PS
