Ours isn't yellow either

Eventually our Hippeaseastrum has flowered, not quite the flaming red colour on the box but very welome.
Planted immediately after Christmas it didn't do anything for ages then it threw up 2 flower stalks, now between 32 and 37 inches above the pot. It didn't appear to want to stop growing.

I like the flower, I like the shadow, but personally I think this an unremarkable image.

There is little contrast between the subject and its background. had it been shot against a dark, or even black, background, it would have a lot more impact.

Not so much the background but the shadows.

Much better, but you've used a slightly too close crop, you've clipped the top of the flower.

Don't you think that your 2nd shot has much more impact?

The flowers are more open now too.

Yes Peter, I agree a much better effect.

I used my walking fleece as a background propped up on a brush behind the flower. Barely big enough and, unfortunately, in trying to avoid the jackets logo and being aware that the whole lot was precariously balanced I didn't notice that I'd cropped a bit too tight.


Ah well, 5/10 must try harder.

I think I need to look at background support systems (highbrow phrase meaning brush handles and chair backs) that won't give my wife apoplexy. She despairs when I start "moving things around"

I used the 1st pic as a challenge to photograph white against a white(ish) background.
