OT. USB hub question

I have a number of USB external hard drives, and have just acquired a USB hub.
If copying files from one drive to another (both attached to the PC via the hub), does all the data have to be transferred up to the PC, then down again to the other drive, or are these things intelligent enough to simply transfer the data straight through the hub?
Thanks

All back via the PC.

Even the USB ports in your PC may be on an internal hub which can slow down the overall transfer rate.

USB isn't intelligent enough for this.
If you have firewire drives it could work because firefire devices can talk to each other directly.

Sadly, I only have one Firewire drive; the others are all USB.
Next time, I'll look at Firewire.

A normal external hard drive with a Firewire port will still require a PC to do anything.
