I'm not sure why you are trying to move the files back and forth?
All you need to do is copy the files into an appropriate folder on your PC and the originals will still be available, untouched, on the SD card.

Yes, that's all I'm doing, just copying them directly from card to compuer. I do this to free up my SD cards. Backup to the PC.
The videos play back fine on the computer, and also when I put them back on the SD card Media Player will play them fine. But the optio will no longer recognize them, even though they are the same unaltered file, in the same directory, same filename. Has me stumped.

I put them back on the SD card so I can do the playback/slideshow output to TV.

I'm using an SD Card reader to transfer the entire DCIM directory to the PC, then transfer it back to the card for playback later. I do not edit the images or video at all or change the original filenames.
When I did backup and restore the data to the card (using file manager) the images were viewable on the camera, but all out of order. And none of the video clips were recognized (the big ? is displayed).
Since the filenames were preserved, and noticing that the file dates had been changed during transfer, I used a file touch utility to change the date back to the original recorded dates. This corrected the order of the images. Apparently the s40 uses file dates to assign the image display order instead of the filename numbering system? Anyway the AVI files are still a no-show. The camera still won't recognize them no matter what I try.
I have tried many cards, formated them first, made a dummy clip, moved it from SD to PC back to PC, keeping all directory structure, filename and original date the same. No luck. As soon as it's copied back and forth it is somehow runied. No change to the file is taken place that I can see. I'm using Win98se. Obviously windows is changing something.
Any sugessions on how I can regain playback of the video files after transferring will be much appreciated. TIA.
