Optio s - memory card error...?

Lizzie,
Do you have, or know anyone else, a PC memory card reader? You could check conclusively whether the card works that way. If it fails on the PC, and fails on the Optio S - then it's a dud card
Alternatively, does the supplied card work okay? If so, I would consider returning the card - you do get dud ones from time to time.
Regards,
Matt

Yeah - we tried the card in our reader and it was OK, so I guess it must be the camera (which is a bummer!). I'd thought whether maybe we'd bought the wrong type of card because the manual said it should have a write protect button on it, but ours hasn't. It's sold as SD Memory so I thought it shouldn't have been any different...?
Thanks for your help though.

Hi. You've no doubt got this little problem sorted out by now since it's been 3 months now, but anyway..........
I had the same problem. When you switch your camera on and get the 'memory card error' message, simply press the MENU button and scroll until you find the section on formatting the card.
I get the impression you thought that it would automatically format or you'd get some sort of step by step format screens.....well I did. I took my card into Jessops and was shown how to do it! I must get to know my camera
Hope this helps........

I was just thinking that I was going to have to go shopping for a new SD card when I found your post. I'd formatted several times in my memory card reader but with no joy. Didn't think I could get to the menu but must not have tried.
Anyway, cheers

I was the same....I didn't think that I could get to any of the screens, let alone the MENU, simply because the error message flashes up and nothing else. One just assumes 'That's it then!'
Thank you for taking the time to reply (some don't) and glad to hear that my woes have help someone else! EVERY DAY IS A SCHOOL DAY'

Hi there
I decided to re-format my card just in case there was a problem the first time I did it and maybe that's why it's coming up with memory card error & switcing off....after "formatting" it came up with "no image & sound" And did nothing....until I switched it off. Is this right, 'cos I don't remember it happening the first time. It's now taking pics, though I'm not sure if the "memory card error" is fixed
Any ideas please?
Thanks

Hi All,
I have had the same problem with my brand new S4i. I was using a Sandisk 1 GB SD card and would receive a "memory card error" after taking about 5-10 pictures. When connecting to my PC, some pictures would not transfer and I would receive a "I/O error" on my PC. Usually, at this point, the file transfer would hang up my PC and the camera. I reformatted the card several times without resolving the issue.
I got a replacement SD card from Amazon, and had the exact same problem, which pretty much rules out a memory card defect. Without really understanding digital cameras, but knowing about computers, I would guess that for me, this is a defect in the camera's read/write mechanism.
I have requested a replacement camera from Amazon and will update upon my receipt.
Cheers,
Ike

I'm new to digital cameras so I'm not sure if mine is actually SLR but it does have some of the creative features. My reply is in connection to the Memory Card Error and I would really appreciate any info relating to it. Is the problem caused because of the camera or the card?
Camera: Optio 555
SD Memory Card: Billionton SD 256MB
Issue: Memory Card Error
Here's the story so far...
* 5th Dec - Bought camera, brought it home, kept getting Memory Card Error - Reformatted - Still got error. No error with the 16MB card that came with the camera. The camera just shuts down when the error occurs.
* 6th Dec - Returned to shop. Got a new Billionton 256MB. Brought camera home. Got Memory Card Error. Reformatted. Got Memory Card Error.
* 11th Dec - Left camera in to shop so that it could be looked at.
* 15th Dec - Told camera was ok though couldn't check it in the shop as the battery was depleted. Brought camera home, recharged it, took 1 photo - Memory Card Error.
I'm currently looking for info on the web to see if Billionton is compatible with the Optio 555 (On their site they only mention the Optio S as far as I can see). I'm new to digital cameras so maybe it has nothing to do with the camera as the 16MB card that comes with it is fine but my first experience has not been a good one.
All information would be greatly appreciated as I'm a bit sick of it now. All I've gotten for my AUD1024 (camera, card, case) is hassle.

Hi,
I occasionally get the memory card error. Gives me kittens thinking I've lost everything. But taking the card out and back in again sorts the problem. My son has an n-gage phone which is prone (can't spell "susseptible") to the same problem. He reckons the concensus of opinion is this is caused by dodgy connections.
Hope this helps.

Hmmm, seems to me that you've covered all angles. Reformatting your card 'should' sort any problems that you're having with it. However, as already mentioned, fouled contacts or past physical abuse to the card may also be the culprit!
I personally, haven't heard of 'Billionton' before, and IMHO, would tend to opt to pay a little extra for a known branded card as you, at least, can return it for testing/replacement/etc. BTW, even they can 'have problems' as I know from other threads/forums, the likes of SanDisk 'were' having problems with their 'Ultra' cards.

It is worth checking on compatibility, because not all SD cards will be suitable. We tend to stick to Jessops, Sandisk or Fuji cards (SD and CF) and so far have had no problems at all. Cheaper cards may not be good value in the end.
Best regards, John
