Open box versus used?

I think open box means it has always remained in the shop and handled/used as a demo.

To be 'on the safe side' i've always assumed rightly or wrongly that an item described as 'open box' might be a customer return under the 14 day cooling off/trial period
that some retailers seem to offer...usually these still come with full warranty so i'm assuming they have been tested to ensure they work as they would from new.
