Oops! I dropped my Optio S5n.

I dropped my S5n (on Christmas day) onto a stone floor in a bar. The camera was switched on and it landed on the extended zoom thing. The three pieces of round plastic casing on it have gone out of shape and will not retract; one of them has split and one has cracked. The black lens cover popped out but appears undamaged. There also seemed to be some tiny shards of glass on the floor around where i dropped it, so i assumed something glass must have shattered. However, the lens itself and the glass covering that (about the size of a 5mm coin), and the screen at the back, all seem intact so perhaps the glass was not from the camera. (Am I forgetting something?)

There is no picture on the screen - it is black or very dark green. If i try to switch it on or off it just beeps - the same beep as when the memory card is full - and the screen goes briefly darker (pitch black), but does nothing else.

The camera's only a few months old but I am assuming this is not covered on the warranty. I am in Thailand at the moment and will be for the foreseeable future, so i would like to get it repaired here if possible to avoid time delay and postage costs to the uk. So please tell me whether there is a pentax repair shop, or some other repair shop, in Thailand where i can get it done (Chiang Mai would be ideal), and an estimate of the cost if at all possible. If you don't know the cost in thailand then please give me a rough idea for the UK, so i know whether it's worth repairing or not.

Cheers.

Judging by the extent of the damage, I reckon it will be far cheaper to buy another
Even a "simple" repair with no signs of crack or damage is around £90 in the UK, from what I remember.

Hi,

not usurping you at all Matt, but I have the list of worldwide service offices in front of me, so I thought I'd say what it says.

Central Trading Co., Ltd (tel 66-2-29-7000/7674
3388/25-37, 51-53, and 82-85 Srinrat Building 8-11th,15th,
23rd Floor Rama 4 Rd. Klong-Toey Bangkok 100110

I assume that somewhere in that jumble of numbers there's an address..

Again, this is for information. Take Matt's advice around these parts.

Cheers

Hi,

I think this kind of damage is usually excluded from warranty claims. If you bought the camera on a credit card you may have some claim on insurance if it is not covered by any other insurance you may have. Maybe your travel insurance can help.

cheers all.

i went to a repair place in chiang mai but the guy said the lens had shattered (as well as the lens casing breaking) so he said i should try the office in bangkok, which i will in a couple weeks when i finish teaching. I'll try to claim on travel insurance (which has a 50 pound excess) if it's expensive to repair, whcih i imagine it will be.

oh, will i need the receipt to get it repaired or get an estimate? I have the invoice somewhere at home but i'm not sure where and my dad can't find it. It's also a copy as i lost the original - is that ok?
