Why not keep an external hard drive elesewhere?
I've seen a couple of the on-line services close down and they don't necessarily give much notice to their users.
What would happen if thousands of users were given a very short time slot to reclaim their images?

Many thanks for your comments, John. For my situation, I thought that on-line storage would be easier. I wouldn't worry too much if the site closed down (as long as I knew!) as I would keep my existing set up as well.
One site even claims that soon, computers will be sold without hard drives as everyone will be using their site. I don't think so!

Martin suggested this one to me www.zenfolio.com
Not really an online storage but it can be used like that.
The only problem is that they only support JPEG, TIFF, PNG and GIF.

In my opinion the online services would be too slow for practical purposes. Normal ADSL lines in Norway have an upload speed of about 400 kbps, so one could easily spend a lot of time waiting for just a few full size pictures to upload. Not to mention the rental costs.
For my part, I synchronise my stationary computer to my laptop, then copy the picture folders (and other important documents) to two external USB hard disks (one for each machine). Keeping the external disks at different locations, I feel pretty safe.
