Off camera flash problems 360FGZ 500FTZ

Hello,
I am trying to use my 500ftz with a 360FGZ flash off camera for macrophotogrpahy (insects). Unfortunately when the FGZ is hooked up both flashes will not fire. I have used the 500ftz off camera and it performs well out in the field (FG hotshe adapter + cable). The "F" hotshoe adapters have never been used up until now so I am thinking that they might be defective. The camera that I am using is a PZ1-P and is functioning normally. PentaxUSA has not been very helpful in dealing with this problem. Please let me know of any suggestions for solving this problem.
