Not quite totally OT. External disk drive conundrum

This question relates to my computer, the home of my digital pictures, and therefore vaguely relevant.

I have two Porsche-design external USB2 hard drives, purchased together. Inside they are Toshibas.

One works fine; but the other, whenever connected to a computer, causes a little box to appear saying: This drive would work better if connected to a USB2 port.

Of course, it always IS connected to a USB2 port.

Any ideas?

What makes you think I am not using it on a Mac?

Have you tried it on another USB port?

Does the drive have any jumpers or dip switrched that configure it?

I'm assuming this has recently occured and the drives are out of warranty.

Try a different cable? Make sure it's a USB2 one. :

Swap the cables and see if the problem transfers to the other drive.

USB 2.0 cables are largely marketing spin, but occasionally you come across a boosted cable (usually long ones) which will only do USB 1.1
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

You wouldn't be having a problem if you had the Mac ?

Thanks for the suggestions.

There are no switches or buttons for configuration, and I have tried several different ports. What I haven't tried is a different cable, so I'll give that a go.

Cheers

Bizarre. Same cable, same port. One machine is USB2, the other is not.

So perhaps they can be configured if I remove the case, or perhaps one is dud, or perhaps I have been sold different drives in identical cases.

Bother!

Don't think the drive would be cause, as any drive should be more than quick enough for USB2. Might be a setting on/in the case.

So were these off the back of a lorry? Can't you get a replacement? Sounds like they're new (to you).

Back of a lorry? How dare you, sir? That's two insults in a week, Bridge; your card is marked.

They were purchased new from Insight 18 months ago, so I don't think they are likely to be sub-standard.

I put up with it before because my old computer only had two USB2 ports, and I assumed I was always selecting a USB1 port. Now, my super-fast new machine is all-USB2, so I need to find an answer.

Did you try sending an e-mail to the manufacturer/distributor explaining the problem to see if they have a solution? This is what I would have done first!

new doesn't always mean free from manufacturing defects or damages.
I had a simillar problem with a firewire case I installed on my robot....
I believe I narrowed the problem down to a static discharge damaging the circiuts inside the case during install....in other words, I broke it.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.
