My wife & I spent our belated Honeymoon in Iceland last week in an attempt to see the Northern Lights and we weren't disappointed. Here's a few of my photos, not only was it cold but very windy as well & in fact we nearly didn't go out due to the force of the wind.

beatiful shots!

I am planning to visit iceland for northern lights as well, may i ask did you join a tour, or did you venture out by yourself?

also what would be the best way to take these shots? should i be needing a tripot? thanks.

You will definitely need a tripod. You will need to push your ISO and have the lens as wide as possible and even then you will need to have it on bulb and exposure time over 10 seconds. I was in Iceland earlier this month and I got some nice shots at 15 seconds at 18mm at f3.5 ISO 800. And yes, it was very cold at night. Though, with windchill it was an effective -10 at the geysir.

I love the detail you have achieved in these, together with the contrasting land and sky colouring.

Where you at sea to take them?

Great aurora images! The Icelandic mountains are a perfect background element for the Northern Lights. I hope some day I will be able to travel to Iceland myself, seems like a very special place!

No we were staying at a hotel but the winds that night were very strong.

Great photos, particularly the first two. In the second one it looks like they come straight out of the mountain, like some weird green volcanic eruption .

I've been lucky enough to experience them three years running. Always a treat.
Trust me, Barrie, you can not take photos of this quality from a boat/ship.

-10C is not cold! It was -20C daytime high when I first went to Norway. Not including the windchill!

It was the foregrounds that had me thinking about ice floes.

Thanks Gwyn. Yes I noticed it above the mountain at rhe time but looks better now.
So I was taking them during a heatwave then!

I also had my first experience of the aurora in Iceland in March. I was very pleased with my photos but I wished I could have had your backdrop. It was an organised trip by Reykjavic Tours but they decided the weather would be better near the airport and not in the National Park as planned. I was a tad disappointed but brilliant nevertheless as it was a bit of a bucket list thing for me.
