North East England camera shops for camera valuations

My father died recently leaving quite a large collection of old and more modern cameras. And I am looking for someone that will do a probate valuation somewhere in the north east of England. Park cameras who are not too far from my father’s house in Surrey are saying a week which is fair enough. However I really need to get back home and cant really wait around.

An anyone suggest somewhere close to newcastle upon Tyne? I have rung London camera exchange in Gosforth and they do not do valuations.

Sorry for your loss Andy, maybe Simon at http://www.collectablecameras.com/ might be able to help - not sure how far he travels to do valuations/purchases but he's in East Yorkshire?

He's a nice, straightforward guy.

Hope it helps

Seems reasonable since it is on my way home. Thanks Lenny. Have you had dealings with him?

The only thing is it would be a reasonable trip back to pick them up if I had to leave anything.

Yes, I've bought from him a few times - never sold to him, but give him a call and discuss what you have I think you'll find him very helpful.

All the best

Unless the cameras are deemed unusual enough to be collectables, would eBay not give you ball-park figures? Is it absolutely essential to value them for probate? I had to look into this once, and low value personal possessions were ignored, it was property, money, shares and high-value personal items that were of concern, i.e. jewellery, paintings, etc.

York Camera Mart in York will readily flog modern stuff and more straightforward older things, like 35mm SLRs and medium format

For the more unusual, try West Yorkshire cameras in Leeds. They sell pretty much anything and Howard there is always pleasant to deal with.

If it's not inappropriate to say it, I'm sure there would be some bits in there you could sell on here. I'd certainly be interested to hear about any of the older bits and pieces.

As a general bit of advice you might find it easier to simply ask people in the trade what they would give you for it. If you ask people for a formal valuation you may scare them off. As somebody else had said, provided you can show you've made an effort to value it that should be sufficient without any need for a formal 'valuation'.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Thank you all for your help. In the end I have split the collection up into sections for valuation.

For the more modern stuff, I have indeed used ebay for an idea of the value. For the rarer cameras, I went to London while I was down there to get a specialist opinion and now have a figure for those. And it appears that some of the older film equipment does not have any value as it has deteriorated to an extent that it would be uneconomical to repair which is a shame. But some of the lenses will probably go on ebay at some point.

I will just say though, Danofmk, none of it is Pentax so not of interest to users here. Sorry.

I will speak to Classicphotographics at some point too as he sounds like a useful contact.

Thanks again.
