noisy

Took my Sigma 70-300 to the air station in Pensacola for a Blue Angels practice session. Last year I didn't have it and wanted to see how I fared with it.

I thought I would love this one, then I saw it on my monitor and it's NOISY. Didn't realize noise would be an issue on a bright morning. ISO is 800, should I have taken it down? (I bumped it to 800 because I knew I'd be shooting mostly at 300mm and wanted to get crisp shots)




This one is really the only one from the day that is so noisy, but it's a shame. BTW, this is only a slight crop.
What would you have done different?

Nothing lost download a 30 day trial of Noise Ninja or Neat Image and run the Image through on the default settings, job done.

Personally I'd rather have a sharp shot that's noisy than a smooth shot that's blurred - it's all a bit of a trade off like most things in photography.

As Scott's shown above you can eliminate the noise in PP easily enough, but if the picture's strong then I never tend to notice noise anyway - I certainly don't find it offensive. It's a personal taste thing I reckon.

Noise Ninja certainly does a great job of reducing the noise but has left a white 'Halo' around the plane.

Is this effect avoidable or an inevitable result of the noise reduction process ??

It would work better with the full size jpeg, I am presuming Scott used it on the small one here.

It was a cracking shot to start with Emily so don't get hung up on the noise issue. As Hefty said, better to have a noisy shot than an unsharp one. But the guys have shown that noise reduction is possible in PS with more than one method. Personally I shoot everything in RAW these days and for higher ISO ratings I use the RAW noise reduction which helps.
At the end of the day you have s super action picture here, noisy or not.
