Newcastle Cathedral must be England's most welcoming to photographers. They don't ban you from taking pictures (Durham do) and no one extracts a fiver from you for the priviledge of a photo permit or entrance fee.
Today I went back to photograph more stained glass. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Most of the glass looks as if its from the Middle Ages but much of it is Victorian. The only pre-Reformation glass is the final picture in my set, a tiny roundel.

Very well taken set of pics .

I won't even ask what's going on under the clothing on this one

I thought the Christian Cult was against that type of sex?

No I saw that but I don't remember the "Lord" ( whatever that is? ) saying those who breast feed should be worthy of death.

This my favourite ...

Lovely set David. You've absolutely nailed the lighting. Have you any of the interior?

Geordie: Newcastle has TWO cathedrals. This is the Anglican church, St Nicholas which has the distinctive lantern tower and stands between the Bigg Market and the High Level Bridge. The other is the RC Church, St Mary's which has a very tall spire. It's opposite the Central Station.
Alan: No, I didn't do any interior shots of the Cathedral, I was just concentrating on the windows.

Beautiful glass in these shots, and well taken. There's true artistry in those windows.

You've really nailed the exposure for these, David. My hunch is that they'd all gain from adding a subtle vignette.

I'll try the vignetting Anderew, it sounds like a good idea. I like photographing coloured glass and have quite a few from the National Glass Centre at Sunderland as well as in various cathedrals. Exposure is critical because its so easy to blow the highlights when you're photographing from inside a dark area. The way I do it is to underexpose by anything from 2/3rds to 2 full stops depending on lighting conditions outside the cathedral. If you maintain detail on the highlights it's easy to pull back the darker coloured area in the glass.
