Picasa is free and does a lot for you to start off, including organising your files.
Do you use a MAc or (Windows) PC ?

I would actually agree with your own comments. Forget about processing for now and concentrate on the basics.
If you start playing with editing software you will spend your time in front of a computer when you should be spending it with your camera.
Nobody ever took a good photograph with Photoshop!

I'd think he needs both Greynolds999.
Try this :
1. Learn the Rule of Thirds (it's not gospel but it's a great place to start)
2. Check out all the excellent free software out there for processing photos.
3. Learn what objects should and should not be included in your shots (this is very noticeable from the series you posted above).
4. Experiment ! Digital is free and you can delete at will .. we all do

All good advice.
Actually I think another one (which is a mix of FH's comments) is don't just take one shot of anything.
Find a subject then try different angles, getting closer/further, higher and lower. It will make you think more like a photographer.

I like the first one, its angle is different to the head on ones you usually see of spiders like that. I wouldnt go below f11 though for macro if you can help it...Get yourself a cheap old flash to help with that (£5 or so)
Check this guy out if your into macro: www.flickr.com/photos/opoterser
He just uses a manual 50mm 1.7 and reversal ring (bellows/extension tubes sometimes) and a cheap flash/DIY softbox...So you dont really need to buy a macro lens as another mentioned.
I'd say learn composition and full manual settings first then never take your camera off manual after that . Make sure you get yourself some decent books or just go to the libary .
I know some people with hate me for saying this, but if you play around with cropping in Photoshop when your learning composition it will help you see what will make your photos better. I find that I have taken some photos to get them home on the computer and I couldnt figure out what the hell was wrong with it until I radically cropped it and change the perspective and that way I knew for future reference to do it when taking the photograph.
Ok I'll stop rambling on now haha.
