Sounds like Pentax might finally be getting round to developing what Canon call 'ring USM' - the SDM they've been using up until now works the same as the 'micro motor USM' which Canon only put in their cheaper lenses. Faster would be nice, but reliable is the more important aspect for Pentax's image.

Interesting times?
If Pentax go with this and it proves faster and reliable (my SDM's have been OK to date), what's the forum members thoughts if Pentax re-introduce their SDM lenses as Mk II variants.
Nikon are doing this with VR II but it could be done with AF in the case of Pentax.
If it does happen, who would upgrade and what's your thoughts on what your current pride and joy lens(s) are going to be worth?

personally, I'm sure I'd be able to sell my DA* 50-135 for more than it cost me, even if prices tumble (then again, I did get lucky!)
Still shooting in the dark (literally and metaphorically)...

maybe the goal is to release a line of sdm "Movie" class lenses in addition to existing models...
faster quieter and more accurate...
Also the newer 100 macro didn't make my existing macro any less able... so I don't feel any need to upgrade...
for those that want faster af, maybe a new body and lens combo is still better than swapping brands completely.

You don't need fast AF speed for a macro lens so they will always hold their price. Maybe they will be able to retro fit the new version or perhaps they will allow screw drive to be enabled.

I had a play with DA*60-250 last week and was really badly disappointed by SDM performance. Otherwise, the IQ is stunning. It's the same case with DA*50-135... I was determined to buy it, but after a couple of days testing it, I went for sigma 50-150/2.8. DA* has slightly better IQ, but sigma's HSM is a lot quicker and more reliable...
SDM mkII DA* lenses would be very welcome in my opinion.

Watch for DA* lenses going out of stock - that would be another leaf out of Nikon's playbook: allowing stock of lenses to run out before replacing them, so that few people get annoyed by buying something the day before it becomes obsolete.

If the new AF system is as good as they claim it is I'd be quite happy to continue using the present SDM lenses. I don't really have an issue with the speed of the lenses, I think it's the body AF system that needs updating, hopefully they've made some improvements.

Actually it isn't since the ring USM is still a ultrasonic motor, this patent is of an electric motor, looks like something used in maglev trains

Do we upgrade our lenses like that? If I had an 18-55mm would I automatically upgrade it when the Mk II version came out? But value only becomes an issue when we are ready to sell. A bit like negative equity in a house being irrelevant if you don't intend to move.

My pride and joy lenses are fast enough for me. I don't care if the value of them falls. I shan't be updating them or selling them.
Who's to say an updated version will be better IQ wise anyway - look at some of Sigma's efforts at updating great lenses.

Any word on whether these new lenses will be compatible with the existing SDM bodies? IIRC the current system uses an AC supply from the body contacts?
