Have you checked the fuse in the plug and the trip switch at the main board?
Also, worth checking that the power lead has not become loose where it is plugged into the printer.

I've used the Canon Pixma series (I have the ip4500, brilliant for photos as well as general purpose, latest is 4850 I think)for some years and found them excellent. Thy are £60 to £70 to buy.
Cheap paper can clog printers up and not using them every week certainly can cause them to clog up. If you leave them on standby they self clean but of course waste ink. Like most things nowadays they don't last forever!
Combined printer scanners are very cheap now and worth buying as long as you can use chipped cartridges in them as the originals often cost mnore than the printer (Kodak the exception but they don't last long (according to my son)! Buy from £30 for Epson, £40 for Canon from Tesco online or similar.

John - those was the first things I tried - I swapped the leads about from Deskjet to the PSC - deskjet worked [ apart from the nonsense with the paper feed ] so it proves that the problem with the PSC is in the machine not its connection. All gadgets like that are connected through surge protection blocks so I know if 'juice' is getting through.

Before deciding on a new printer check the price of ink for it. Some printers are sold for less than the price of the ink cartridges which can turn a bargain into a really expensive white elephant.
Some printers will also only take cartridges from the manufacturer, not third party inks, which is possibly another thing to consider.
I have an HP all in one with the option of photo inks, including a grey cartridge. I am very happy with it and the ink isn't too expensive. I use XL cartridges for it which make a big difference. The model is no longer for sale so I shan't bother naming it.

Can't really complain about my Kodak all-in-one, least frustrating printer I've ever owned, not particularly thirsty in my experience, and the ink is really cheap (£16.49 from Amazon for a full set). They claim 40% lower printing costs than the competition. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was about right! I got it for general printing needs, but it actually makes very decent borderless A4 photo prints. The future of the Kodak company would be the only question mark in my mind if I was buying now.

£5.55 plus postage for a set of five chipped (German or Swiss ones for a bit more) cartridges for my Canon iP4500 from ink.co.uk Brilliant results and no waste with seperate inks for text, photo and colours. Their on brand paper is excellent too. All Agfa it seems as some Agfa branded paper I had from them was identical.

I have always had Epson and currently have the PX720WD which is excellent. I use non-genuine inks (Signal refillable, off ebay) which cost a fraction of the Epson ones and there is no discernible difference.
My printer cost £84, looks like they have gone up a bit to around £112 (Amazon) now, but for the money it's a superb piece of kit. Highly recommended.

Finally been and gone and done it
All suggestions have been considered and cogitated upon . Even discussed it with the kids [ well the bride will want some photos I'll take printed I have no doubt ]
With a wee contribution from the kids I'm ordering up an HP Photosmart 6510 e All in One . Incredibly it's cheaper buying it directly from HP than anywhere else I've spotted. OK the boat has been pushed out a bit - but this machine should dae me all my time [ as my granny would have said ]
If I order it on Monday , I'll have it on Tuesday with free shipping too - taa HP

OK - Printer is now here and more or less set up.
Printing wirelessly is easy from across the room - definitely the lazy way to do it. I've even managed to do back to back printing without a problem - tick a box and watch it do it itself - very nice.
Copying - superb.
Insertion of the 4 ink cartridges is the easiest I have ever done - truly !
Preparation of the cartridges - that's a different story - tearing off the cellophane cover - no problem , taking off the orange lever type thing that covers the nozzle - that was NOT easy , it left grooves on the ends of my fingers - not for folk with difficulty with their hands.
Scanning - not yet got that cracked - will carry on working on that .
Have ordered up a set of new XL cartridges from 7day shop - seems to be the cheapest around - I'm sticking to genuine HP carts at present - really can't afford for anything to go wrong while it's still under warranty if I'm not using their products. After this I'll probably be using XL Black and ordinary Colour carts - I don't do a lot of colour printing , but I know I've got a fair amount coming up.
Only real grumble so far - lack of a manual - not even on the install disk !! There are times when a real life printed manual in your paws is easier than looking for the answer in an online manual.

I think this is so you download the manual and print it, thereby increasing ink sales!

2 printers have suddenly died on me - my own HP PSC 1410 - which got accidentally switched off the other day when I must have brushed my hand over the control panel - can't switch it on at all Tried the old unplug stunt - left it for over an hour - still can't kick it into life
Pulled out my husband's Deskjet 380 [ seems to be exactly the same as the PSC 1410 ] it's had no use for over 2 years now . It fired up no problem but paper feed is decidedly dodgy - and I'm using the paper we have always used - can't rely on it so count that as defunct . I will soon be doing a lot of back to back printing and a machine that prints one sheet dragging another with it , then spits out 4 blank sheets and tells me it has no paper[ when there's approx 100 in the tray ] is not what's wanted .
My needs :-
small in size,
able to print decently and quietly in black and/or colour ,
must have a photocopy facility ,
not worried about wireless printing [ never tried that but I doubt my ability to set it up ]
Has to be reliable and would prefer it to have reasonably large ink cartridges.
Has to work with Macs.
Do not want to pay a fortune for it - this has come up at exactly the wrong time - Road Fund tax , Daughter #2's wedding in 2 weeks , new hearing aids to be paid for .
Ideas please - have used Epson , HP and Pixmas in the past.
