The pixel-peepers on DepressingReview are getting their knickers in a twist worrying whether the update will fry their cameras. "This is madness", "expensive paperweight", etc.
However, it is worth noting that in the documentation the firmware file is described as: fwdc162.bin, whilst the file included in the unofficial zip is fwdc162b.bin. Note the "b".
This suggests to me that the official release of the firmware could be slightly different. In the documentation it is mentioned that the official release date is 23 January. This is not too far away, and rather than install twice I shall wait for the final version.

George,
Just a comment or two... if you take a look at all your *ist-D firmware files, and *ist-DS files they all end in "b".
It's not "b" for "beta"
I suspect what they have done is release the .bin file to their reps and will produce the Windows and Mac installation files for the general public.
Whether it's real or not though, I've downloaded the file, checked out the features, but haven't installed it. I'll wait until next week when it's released proper

I too will be waiting for the real version, I don't have a PTTL flash to control with it (yet) and while the ISO adjustments will be nice they are nothing that can't wait until next week.
I'm sure the guy on that site is 100% genuine, but I'd rather download my firmware from Pentax.

I didn't say it was b for beta. I just noted the difference in nomenclature, which suggests to me that Pentax were leaving open the option of making further changes.George,

I find it interesting that they have now decided they can control the external flash from the camera. Why wasn't that there before? Since it is clearly only a software change there is no cost implication, and the technology was tried and tested in the *ist D.
I reckon that the complexities of the K10D were such that Pentax had great difficulty in getting it to market before Christmas. So some things were just ditched, to be picked up later.
All of which leads me to hope that there may be other enhancements to come. Although, I must say that I can't think of anything more that the camera needs. Perhaps the high ISO banding issue, though since I don't use high ISO I can't say it will make any difference to me.

Being in exactly the same situation with my current firmware developments, I know exactly how it feels I'm taking the very same line in development...I reckon that the complexities of the K10D were such that Pentax had great difficulty in getting it to market before Christmas. So some things were just ditched, to be picked up later.
What is interesting about the flash issue is the K10D does not support wireless HS mode. And I can understand that - the power requirements and the EMC issues of a flash being pulsed at high frequency are probably a right pain to sort out, especially with SR too!
Still, that's the main issue for me sorted - wireless P-TTL and "proper" manual remote flash from the pop-up means I can sell on my hunking great Metz 50MZ5 kit (anyone interested?? ).
For outdoor fill in flash I'll stick to the AF540 in tethered mode using HS mode

I'll second that, at least then I can finally admit that I can't afford one and set my sights on a Sigma 18-50 F2.8

Pete,
There's a link in that (huge) thread... but if I were you I'd wait until next week until Pentax put it on their own website
And, yes, it's for the K10D, version 1.10

Pete,
It'll be safest to wait until it is officially released next week, then it should be avaliable from the main Pentax website.
