New Firmware

No, they'd have to reload the software to the EPROM memory chip if the camera cannot do it itself anymore. Just like when a memory card gets corrupted and you reformat it and reinstall anything back onto it you want to keep.

So, I assume at that point you've reached the stage that you can't do it your self, then this has to be done by a repair shop


So I think my point stands, all is not lost. At worst its a repair job, at best the camera will function "better?" once you've finished and the cost was zero

Just follow the instructions that came with the firmware and you will be find. Remember to use a new charged up battery that's all.

At the risk of sounding patronising, it is straightforward to upgrade the firmware: go to link and click on the download for your type of computer system- PC or MAC. When that's done, you'll find the actual firmware update file(ending xxx.BIN)and the procedure instructions (Read_me file) dated the day you're at, in your computer's Downloads list (start>computer>downloads). Click on, open, & read the "Read_me" file, then having checked that your battery is showing full charge, connect your camera (by the cable that came with it) to your computer, follow the (pretty simple) instructions in the "Read_me" to copy & paste the xxx.BIN file to the SD card in your camera, and Bob's your uncle- really!
I take the view that if Pentax have gone to the trouble of making these system improvements available, they are highly likely to be worth installing

My K7 is still on version 1.0.

What differences do you think I would/should notice?
How long would it take to download, given that our broadband speed is the pits!?
I've been nervous of doing it previously because of a), the b/b speed &, b), my concern of doing something "wrong" & doing more harm than good!

Just click on the firmware and it tells you what each firmware upgrade did/does. The last one carries all previous updates so just use that if you are far behind. LINK

I may have discovered a bug in the new firmware. I noticed today when using an old 'A' series lens that my K5 was allowing shutter release before focus was confirmed. This happens in all modes except USER mode. The position of the focus mode dial 'M' AFS or C makes no difference I have rechecked the settings and everything is set as before.

Catch in focus is not enabled and focus priority rather than FPS priority is selected for AFS and C
DA series exhibit the same effect when the focus mode dial is set to 'M'

I have tried the usual switching off, removing the battery, to no effect. I have also reset settings but again to no effect.

Has anyone else experienced this effect?

Same here Steve but I've found that "Catch in focus" had been reset to OFF. turning it back to ON seems to have fixed it.

Thanks Barrie, just did the same and working fine. I can't recall ever switching it on before, maybe it was on by default.
I checked my User 1 settings and it was enabled. I assume that these were carried over from before the firmware update, which would seem to support the idea that the default setting has changed.

I can remember having to switch it ON in the K20, but like you I don't remember doing anything to the K5.

Mine remains switched ON ie set to 2

Not noticed any other quirks "yet"
