IMHO Samsung makes some of the best monitors available. I have a SyncMaster 173T myself (17", 1280x1024 pixels), which has a viewing angle of 178x178 degrees. This means that the picture display is virtually independent of your viewing angle. Also, I have found that colour and contrast is very good without any calibration at all. Many websites feature a grayscale for monitor control, and I'm able to see all levels of gray on my monitor.
This model is probably out of production by now, but you will find a wide range of monitors available, in various sizes. Just be aware that 17" and 19" monitors have a native resolution of 1280x1024 pixels, while 20" and bigger have a resolution of 1800x1200 pixels. And, to obtain maximum sharpness, any LCD monitor should be run at its native resolution.

I have no idea what to look for though. What contrast ratio, brightness etc etc do I need? Are Eizo really that much better than say Samsung?
In other words any help advice and suggestions are welcome.
