- get one with a static contrast of 1:1000 or at least 1:800 (not dynamic contrast!)
Personally, I would look for more. Earlier I suggested LG Flatron monitors. My current 22" has a sticker referring to 5000:1 Digital Fine Contrast. Just what that term means, I have no idea - I do know that the range between light and dark is more than I can rasonably detect.
Just be warned - the normal definition of Contrast used by vision scientists is one that (assuming it could be viewed) would give the contrast between totally white and dead black as zero - which is clearly wrong - and which gave me much fun when I used to teach HCI. Also be warned that perceived contrast will vary with changes in the ambient light. I changed the lampshade in my office/workroom, and then had to make and fit a diffuser to get things the way I wanted.
John asked for specific recommendations:
Get a Lenovo. That's Chinese from the factory that used to build for IBM. Not the greatest spec, but built like a tank. Comes with a 3-year on-site warranty. Team this with a LG Flatron monitor. You have a mouse and keyboard already. There you have a reliable functional system. Sort of a Volvo type of system. It will still be working well in 5 years time when everyone else is wittering on about upgrading. Look for model Thinkcentre A58.

I haven't seen any price range from maidmarian so I suggest a couple cheaper ones and bit more expensive ones that I believe would be good for Photoshop cs3. Best to ask from the the vendors for any memory upgrades as it's bit hard for me to get info about these computers.
This is a cheapish one from Curry , that can surely make Photoshop run satisfactorily. It has 4 gigs of RAM, 640 gigabytes of diskspace and integrated graphics processor link.
A faster one also from Curry link.
From Comet we have link. Another good budget choice link. This one is a nice one too link. These are some that can drive Photoshop happily I believe.

Thanks Tobio, some straightforward suggestions.

All of those will run Photoshop faster and better than I do on this ageing machine!

Geoff that's dynamic contrast, the static contrast is 1000:1 of the LG
The only problem is that it is a TN Panel and they aren't that good in the range of colours they can display.

The Hewlett-Packard LP2475w is an interesting screen, you might think it's a bit expensive but worth the money though.

Thank you John. I'm sure Maidmarian gets a good computer. She could also buy an external hard drive from the same store. Might get a deal that way. Not sure how things work there in England though.

my best advice would be pop into a smaller computer shop, they will generally have 2nd hand pc's, ask for 2.2ghz dual core or better, 4 gig of ram, windows 7 and dedicated graffix, 512meg-1gig. As your not wanting a monitor or anything else this is your cheapest option without being forced into a package, and should cost you around 150-200 pound.

This might also be a good idea, provided they give a good guarantee for the hardware.

Good idea Glover. We have a couple of such shops around here, and the people who run them are very good.

Thank you, thank you thank you ALL SO much,
You have ALL been so very helpful and giving freely of your time and knowledge; A very rare thing these days, Bless you all!
I have been making notes of what I read here so that I know to ask when I speak with salespeople ( read it all 5 times so far!)

And you can add to that:
Buy one of the computer magazines, and keep reading it in the light of what you have read here. After a while, the words will start to make sense to you (or at least not seem so strange) .

Me too. It's perhaps the best of the UK rags. Their budget desktop recommendation, the PC Specialist’s Aurea i3-530 Pro, sounds like a good bet, perhaps with another 2GB of RAM added. There's not much room for new drives, but I find external ones are pretty good.

Might get one for the barge, as electrical consumption is pretty good.
