I can't even make basic flash work properly!
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

Ha! This is a easy peasy flash! You can use it like a normal flash with a guide number of 60, or, you can change the head for the bare bulb option if you're shooting it through a softbox, brolly etc.

When you have the correct trigger, you can adjust the power from that so you don't need to be messing with the flash head, of its in a brolly for instance.

I mainly used it for portraits both indoors and outside where I needed the power to balance the sunlight.

On the flash you can select P-TTL, HSS or manual mode (which is where I've always used it)

If you have the trigger for a different brand, well the flash can be used the same so Fuji, Canon or Nikon TTL.

You can also set the flash to fire on a certain group, so say you had a few of these, or other Godox flashes, this could be set to sat channel one where its 1/8th power and the others set to channel 2 where they're set at maybe 1/2 power.

This is the Pentax trigger but you can buy a Godox X1 trigger for Canon which won't allow TTL so manual only and then it's just a 'dumb' trigger which is cheaper.
