gotta great Idea...but lacking in the smarties dept as well as monetary...
so why sit on a great idea when you can share it...

Iphone / Itouch software and hardware...
need a cable with a resister and capacitor that will take sound frequency from the iphones speaker and trip the shutter on the pentax (and there fore canon) d-slrs. also programmed to operate using the iphones mic if needed.
a web based software widget and Iphone program that allows you to operate from a laptop, over the net, or just the iphone...

there is enough talent and skills right here on this forum to make it go if you guys wanna collaborate.

I'm wondering on the "Why?" as well...

If you want remote control over the Internet then why use the iPhone? What you need is tethering from a PC/Mac to the camera to put the shutter/settings/viewfinder via a web-service - then you can control from the iPhone over the web.

Tim's link looks a good one though for direct linkage into the camera via USB
EDIT: Now I see that software is two parts - one 'server' running on Mac or PC that links directly to the camera, and the 'client' that you run on the iPhone/iPod.

If you want a sound operated shutter, well that's another matter...

if you really wan2 take i phone to the limits with pentax, here's an idea: using the i phone as a direct image storage device. If you could somehow have an application that would support a direct storage from your pentax (supporting RAW and jpeg)to the i phone with the use of a compatible cable, this would be the ultimate. You'd make a fortune. Every day new app's are being developed for the i phone due to it's extensive and brainy users. Therefor i am sure you could do something like this to

Mattox if they could do that then I see no reason why you cant hang a USB storage device on it as well, that would be far better then a Iphone.

Still hoping they would make such an interface, would help not to carry a laptop for a weekend away.

Rightly so, but having access to i phone storage gives you the possibility to not only view you images directly on a larger, high quality screen, but to email your shots to friends and facebook for example. A fun idea, no?

At it's most basic, the idea would make it possible to geotag photos, and remote operate the camera from a robot, rc vehicle, balloon, with the possibility to recover (find my iphone) if lost and to place cameras in odd locations (eagle nest type shots)... basic wifi could be done with a wifi equipped sd card already available and would not require an iphone dock (don't want to have to licence proprietory cables do we?) and be cross platform with canon, bigger market if you wanted to sell them.

going more advance would be fun, but cost?

To be honest I don't see it happen since Apple wants to control everything you do with the phone.

Just thought about it but with most other telephones you can already do that!
Simply use a micro or mini SD with an adapter for in your camera.
When you want to put the photos on you phone you can simply take out the card and put it in the phone and copy the photos to the internal memory.

I believe that Apple deliberately disabled/prevented direct file storage on the iPhone. There are plenty of apps which will allow you to store files online and sync copies to the iPhone - but none as far as I'm aware that allow direct file storage.

Thinking of apps, this Dog Whistle app has adjustable frequency - it might work ?!
