MZ-S

Hi Simon,
I must say that I tend to agree with you. I tried the Z1-P which was possibly the most highly spec'd film camera that Pentax did. I was never fully happy with it and as soon as I picked up the MZ-S, the Z1-P went. I have a few Pentax's but it is the only one apart from the LX that I "knew" I had to have as soon as I picked it up.

I like to compare the MZS niche market to that of the Leica R series.
Those things still have that crazy film advance lever! And forget about auto focus, that's for chumps!
Heck, even the shutter speed is set with that wacky dial on the top! Look at that thing!

But ooooh baby, what a sweet camera! I was seriously thinking of getting into the R line, but I opted for the MZS instead.
Niche market... it ain't for everyone!

Wow! I'm surprised at some of you!
Did the LX have aperture control built into the body? No. Does the LX suck!? NO! How did you set aperture priority for the past 30 years? You turn the aperture ring
It's the new non-aperture-ring lenses that need to be replaced, not the MZS.
I agree with you on both points but the MZ-S should still allow you to set the aperture on the body AS WELL as on the lens itself. The problem with setting it only on the lens is that some lenses are a bit to chunky, giving very little space to get chubby fingers around the aperture ring. This is ergonomically very poor and unlike Pentax.

Personally I'd be quite happy never having to set the aperture except on the lens if it wasn't for the fact that Pentax have produced lenses without an aperture ring and ditched full support for the aperture ring in the DSLR's!

I was shooting some frosty scene pics at lunchtime today with a SMC-M 50mm F1.7 fitted to my DS and I think it'll be a while before the way metering has to be done with that combination becomes second nature to me.

i too like the mz-s very much. never let me down! I used the Z1-p before.
The only point is who did in the past make a date back to put a stamp on each photo????? They should kill that person.

The ergonomics are very good, people who uses nikon/canon took my camera and held it and liked the grip. The light meter never let's me down in theater, and that's a good point that i can rely on that.

I have to agree with the 'keep the MZ-S , change the lens' opinions above .

I have been using Pentax MF cameras for about 30 years (started out with a KM , then an ME , followed by a couple of MX's and finally my LX's which I still use regularly) . I got an *ist D a while back and sent back the Pentax kit lens which came with it (because it had no aperture ring) and exchanged it for a Sigma 15-30 EX lens which did have a manual aperture ring , allowing me to use it as a super-wide angle lens on my LX

Like others before me , I can't see me ever buying a lens with no aperture ring .

I don't own any other AF lenses , but happily use the *ist D with my collection of SMC-M lenses I have built up over the years ( recently my 20 year old daughter has 'stolen' 3 or 4 of my primes along with one of my MX bodies to learn photography - not a bad place to start) .

I have just this morning bought an MZ-S which I saw on Ffordes used equipment list , and thought I'd snap it up as this is only the second time I have seen a used one for sale . As long as the build quality approaches my older cameras or at least equals my *istD then I'll most likely be happy with it .

I tend to use the 'D' most of the time for run of the mill stuff , and the LX when I want to be creative - time will tell if I'm going to let the MZ-S take over from it .

I would say ditch the Sigma lenses..... I have a few but they all have aperture rings....

If you can find one.... get an SMC 24-90 f3.5-4.5 lens, supplement it with say the Sigma EX 70-200 mm f2.8....

Both go perfectly well with my Z-1, Z-1p, MZ-S and *ist D...

Just thought I'd add my two penneth.

I was lusting after the MZS when it was first released, but decided my good old MZ7 was good enough for what I wanted, surprise surprise, the MZ7 is FULLY compatable with FAJ lenses, now I am glad that I held off buying the MZS in the hope that Pentax would quickly release the digital verion of same body. I also have a very handy Sigma 28-200, this is very difficult to use in AV on my MZ5n due to the size of the lens and the diminutive size of its aperture ring, which like on the MZS needs to be set via said ring, On the MZ7 however......no problem, I just set it via the camera body, so YES Pentax did go extremely retro with the MZS, but maybe they figured it would be bought by pro's, and we all know pro's like to twiddle with their lenses!
My Names Alan, and I'm a lensaholic.
